IllawarraBorn1
Illawarra Born: Cross Generation Study

The Project

Illawarra Born_1The Illawarra Born project aims to gain an insight into the health and wellbeing of a community, and thus Australia as a whole, by examining the lifespan of three generations: the pre-born baby, the parents, and the grandparents.

By observing different stages of the life cycle at the same time, and across different family units, researchers will be able to gain valuable information about healthy ageing and provide a unique look at such areas as mental health and genetics.

The multidisciplinary project aims to involve up to 7000 Illawarra residents, including 4000 grandparents, expanding on the original project which focused on pregnant women, their partners and their newborns. The next stage will examine the mental health and wellbeing of grandparents and how health patterns are translated across generations.

The research team comprises doctors, psychologists, geneticists, paediatricians, obstetricians, and social scientists. The project aims to provide benefits on a local, national and international level with scope to develop research partnerships.
